Summary: Scientists have done studies in cities and it shows that urbanization has effected biodiversity. It shows that a cities heritage in bird and plant systems have decreased ever since urbanization. Compared to under-developed cities, that share similar climate characteristics, it only retains approximately 20% of bird species and 5% of plant species. In order to stop biodiversity loss, the people of the city must be informed. It says here that it would be better to keep more "green areas" because it would retain a larger amount of bird and plant species, but also be beneficial to the individuals living in the cities. It states that in the end urbanization has a bad impact on biodiversity and that there should be more green in all cities to prevent a significant amount of loss in biodiversity.
Human Impact: humans have severely impacted biodiversity loss. It is because of humans that urbanization occurs, therefore it is the humans fault that there is biodiversity loss. Chopping down trees in order to create room for a commercial building shows that it is in humans hands that biodiversity is being loss.
Environmental Impact: In an ecosystem, many biotic things interact with one another to keep the ecosystem sustainable. When urbanization occurs, a lot of the biotic things are not retained, such as in these species. Therefore, sustainability of that ecosystem is at risk. Interaction between other biotic things can interrupt the cycle of an ecosystem.
Economic Impact: loss of biodiversity can have a large impact on the economy. species could be led into extinction if urbanization continues to occur at a fast pace, and therefore, those that are investing in protecting bird species will have a loss in money because bird species will be dying out because of the loss of biodiversity.
Government Legislation: passed in 1966 the endangered species act protects species. Along with this act there is a biodiversity action plan which shows that there are recovery plans in the U.S. The recovery plans are set out to recover the loss in biodiversity.
